Games rule iPhone App store

Would you like to play a game? If you own an iPhone, you should't have trouble finding one.

Analytics site Mobclix has compiled a breakdown of all iPhone Apps, and lo and behold, games are far and away the most popular. Of the nearly 21,000 apps currently available, about 25% (6,165) are of the games variety, doubling the 13% of runner-up Entertainment.

Equally interesting is the breakdown within the Games category itself. While puzzle games are pretty far ahead of the pack, it seems many iPhone users subscribe to the gamer family plan, with "educational" and "kid" titles outnumbering typically strong performers like word and card games.

Part of gaming's success on the system can be attributed to the comparative ease of development and consumer-friendly price point. Stories of amateur designers hitting pay dirt have turned heads, while the economic downturn has only helped Apple's uber-phone become a more legitimate threat to handheld systems from Sony and Nintendo, both of which still feature new software priced around the $40 mark.
