Mexico beats Bolivia 5-1 in friendly

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP)—Perhaps now, Sven-Goran Eriksson will hear less about his job security and more about qualifying for next year’s World Cup.

Matias Vuoso and Leandro Augusto scored less than nine minutes apart in the first half, leading Mexico to an easy 5-1 win over Bolivia in an international friendly Wednesday night.

Vuoso added his second goal of the game in the 59th minute and left to a standing ovation when Eriksson went to his reserves for the game’s final 28 minutes. Bolivia, playing a man down for the last 60 minutes, got its only goal when Didi Torrico scored on an excellent individual effort in the 69th minute. Any hopes of a comeback ended when Sergio Santana scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute.

The victory, which came in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 18,296, gave Eriksson a reprieve from talk about his job. Mexico is winless in its past four World Cup qualifying matches.

Mexico, seeking to build momentum heading into its next World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on March 28, carried the play from the start. Omar Bravo nearly scored on a header 45 seconds into the game, but his attempt was blocked by goalie Carlos Arias.

Vuoso put Mexico ahead in the 24th minute when he one-timed a centering pass from Israel Martinez inside the right goal post.

Mexico scored again in the 33rd minute, taking advantage of a red card against Bolivian defender Juan Manuel Pena. Augusto took the ensuing direct kick from 25 yards and curled it around the wall into the left corner of the net.

Mexico won easily despite playing without three top forwards. Giovanni dos Santos, Nery Castillo and Guillermo Franco all remained with their European clubs.
